Language: Coos to First Words

How communication unfolds from cooing to babbling to first words, and simple ways to feed it daily.

Long before the first word, your baby is learning language at an astonishing rate — and the fuel is beautifully simple: your voice, your face, and lots of back-and-forth.

The first-year roadmap

• **0–3 months:** startles to sounds, calms to your voice, begins cooing ("ooh," "aah") and social smiling around 6–8 weeks.
• **4–6 months:** laughs, squeals, blows raspberries, turns toward voices, and experiments with sounds.
• **6–9 months:** true babbling arrives — repeated syllables like "ba-ba-ba" and "da-da-da." Baby responds to their name and enjoys turn-taking games.
• **9–12 months:** babble takes on the melody of real speech, gestures bloom (pointing, waving, arms up), baby understands simple words like "no" and "bye-bye," and first words often land around the first birthday — though anywhere from 10 to 15 months is common.

How to feed language every day

• **Narrate your life:** "Now we're washing your toes… splash!" Hearing rich, varied talk is the strongest predictor of vocabulary.
• **Serve and return:** when baby coos or babbles, respond as if it were conversation, then pause for their turn. These loops literally build brain architecture.
• **Read daily from birth** — board books, silly voices, pointing at pictures.
• **Sing and play** — songs, rhymes, and peekaboo teach rhythm, anticipation, and turn-taking.
• Skip screens in the first year (video chat with grandparents is the AAP's happy exception); live faces teach best.

When to mention it to your doctor

Bring it up if baby doesn't respond to sounds or their name, isn't babbling by 9 months, uses no gestures by 12 months, or loses skills they had. Early support makes a real difference.
