Bottle & Formula Feeding 101
Safe formula preparation, paced bottle feeding, and how to keep bottle time responsive and calm.
Whether you're formula feeding fully, combination feeding, or bottle-feeding expressed milk, the essentials are the same: safe preparation, a responsive pace, and plenty of closeness.
Preparing formula safely
Formula is nutritionally complete and closely regulated — the key is hygiene and exact mixing.
- Always follow the tin's instructions precisely: water first, then powder. Never dilute or concentrate formula.
- Use safe water; for babies under about 2–3 months, health authorities such as the NHS recommend preparing powdered formula with water hot enough (around 70°C / 158°F) to kill any bacteria in the powder, then cooling it before feeding.
- Wash bottles and nipples in hot soapy water and sterilize per your local guidance in the early months.
- Use prepared formula within the recommended window and discard whatever's left in the bottle after a feed — saliva introduces bacteria.
Paced, responsive bottle feeding
Paced feeding lets your baby control the flow, which supports comfortable digestion and healthy appetite regulation:
- Hold baby fairly upright and keep the bottle more horizontal, so milk fills the nipple without pouring.
- Pause every few minutes; watch for cues like turning away, slowing down, or splaying fingers.
- Let baby decide when the feed is over — never push to finish the bottle.
- Never prop a bottle or put baby to bed with one; it's a choking and ear-infection risk.
Making it a bonding moment
Hold your baby close, make eye contact, switch sides occasionally, and let feeds be unhurried. Bottle feeding done this way gives your baby the same warmth and connection as any feed — and lets partners share those lovely, sleepy moments too.
